Choosing Your Emitter Strategy

One of the biggest benefits of Ooze Tube® technology is that you get to decide how much water you want to give your tree. The more emitters you install, the more water you give your tree... and the shorter the span of time between refills.

There are two main factors that you should take into account as you make your decision:

  • Time of Year: The transpiration rate on trees is at its maximum during early spring to mid summer, as new shoot growth is forming and until it hardens off; usually sometime in mid-July. Conversely, in Fall, the canopy is going dormant and the tree requires much less water.

  • Soil type: heavy clay soil requires a little less water than sandy soil, but only because it has a much greater surface area and tends to retain more water from rainfall events, etc. Remember, the soil in the root ball is more important than the surrounding soil, meaning the soil conditions at the tree farm (for field grown trees) may actually be more important than the soil conditions at the planting site.

The recommendations below, are based upon a springtime planting and should serve as a good starting point for trees planted in either clay or sandy soils. If you are doing a fall planting, you can use fewer emitters, provided you remember to install more when new shoots start forming in the tree's first spring growing season.

25 Gallon Ooze Tube (standard capacity emitter)

Caliper

# of Emitters

~Refill Frequency

Under 2½" 1 1 per month
2½ - 3½" 2 2-3 weeks
4" 3 weekly
5" 4 weekly

45 Gallon Ooze Tube (high capacity emitter)

Caliper

# of Emitters

~Refill Frequency

4" 2 1 per month
5 - 6" 3 2-3 weeks
6"+ 4 weekly

Remember, these recommendations should be considered guidelines for a starting point; You may decide to use more or fewer emitters based upon the time of year you will be planting, your specific soil conditions, your climate, and the type of tree you are planting.
